Birgunj is one of the trading hubs in the southern plain Terai of Nepal and is located in Parsa district. Birgunj is a major city of Province No. 2 and it borders with Raxual (an Indian City of Bihar State) to the South. This city is the second largest city in the Terai region of Nepal after Biratnagar. It was declared as a metropolitan city in 2017 along with Biratnagar. While entering Nepal from Patna and Kolkata, Birgunj is commonly called the “Gateway to Nepal”.

Birgunj Metropolitan City

Birgunj metropolitan city is the sixth most populated metropolitan city of Nepal. The total area of the city is 75.24 Sq. KM i.e. 29.05 Sq. Miles. According to the census conducted in 2011, the total population of this metropolitan city is 204,816. Mr. Vijay Sarawagi is the mayor of Birgunj Metropolitan city and Ms. Shanti Karki is the deputy mayor.

Birgunj Weather

Like in Biratnagar, Birgunj has a warm and temperate climate. As with most places in Nepal, Birgunj witnesses much more rainfall in summer than in winter.

Annually Birgunj receives rainfall in an average of 349 mm. With an average of 349 mm, the month of July receives the highest amount of rainfall during the year and December is the driest month of all. The precipitation during this month is somewhere around 3 mm.

The annual average temperature of Birgunj is 24.7 degree Celsius. January is the coldest month with the average temperature of 15.8 degree Celsius and the May is the warmest month. The average temperature during the month is 30.2 degree Celsius. The variation in temperature is 14.4 degree Celsius whereas the difference in precipitation is 346 mm.

Birgunj to Kathmandu

The distance between Birgunj and Kathmandu is 135.8 KM via Kulekhani-Sisneri- Pharping road. However, the actual distance from Birgunj to Kathmandu through the bus route is about 275 KM. There are regular buses traveling to Kathmandu from Birgunj. The bus fare is around Rs. 400-Rs. 500 i.e. $4- $5 per person for a normal bus. The deluxe buses (with the facilities of Wi-fi) charge more fare which around Rs. 1100 ($11) and they’re comparatively luxurious than the normal ones. Travel duration is about 10 hours until the bus reaches Kathmandu.

However, if you prefer to travel to Kathmandu from Birgunj through the shorter route mentioned above, you have to either hire a car or taxi. It’s going to take you somewhere between 5-6 hours of time until you reach Kathmandu.

Similarly, since Birgunj doesn’t have an airport on its own, there are regular flights from Simara to Kathmandu. The flight duration is less than 20 minutes and there are regular flights from Budhha air (around 6 flights daily). Simara is just 20 KM away from Birgunj via Tribhuvan Highway.

Many people also have queries regarding the availability of Train from Birgunj to Kathmandu. Unfortunately, the capital city is not linked with railway stations in any way; mainly because of the difficult topography.

Birgunj to Pokhara

Pokhara is about 257.3 KM away from Birgunj and it takes around 7-8 hours to reach there by private vehicles. There is a number of tourist buses and also the normal buses go to Pokhara from Birgunj on a regular basis. However, there are no flight options from Birgunj to Pokhara.

Birgunj to Biratnagar

It takes around 6-7 hours from Birgunj to reach Biratnagar through East-West Highway and the distance between these two cities is about 310 KM.

Raxual to Birgunj

Birgunj (central city) is just 10 KM away from Raxual (the Indian trading city) and it takes about half an hour to reach there.

Patna to Birgunj

The distance between Patna and Birgunj is about 225km. Bus duration to reach Patna from Birgunj is somewhere around 6 hours.

Places to visit in Birgunj

Birgunj even though being the commercial hub of central Terai, it is an equally important destination for the touristic attractions. Some of them are mentioned below:

  • Shree Gahawamai Temple (a holy temple for the Hindus)
  • Ghadiarwa Pokhari (a neat and clean pond; a perfect destination for chilling out)
  • Surya Temple (lies in the middle of Ghadiarwa Pokhari and the temple is dedicated to the Sun God)
  • Parsa Wildlife Reserve (a protected area for endangered wild animals and plants)
  • Gadimai Temple (a temple dedicated to the goddess of power. A popular festival called Gadhimai festival held for a month-long duration is held in this temple)
  • Ghantaghar (situated in the middle of Birgunj is a structure that has been an identity of the city)
