Dharan is a beautiful city in Sunsari district in province no. 1 of Nepal which is to the eastern part of Kathmandu; the capital city of Nepal. Dharan is a city surrounded by hills on the foothills of Mahabharat Range. It is an elevation of 349 m (1148 ft). This place is famously known as the football-producing factory of Nepal. And the city is regarded as the second biggest city of Eastern Nepal after Biratnagar, which proves to be a trading hub between the hilly and Terai region. The reason why Dharan is becoming a popular choice among people is that of its diversified geography.

The total area of Dharan is 19,261 Sq. KM i.e. 7,437 Sq. Miles. According to the population census of 2011, the total population of Dharan was 119,915 making it the 4th populated city of Province No. 1 and the 15th most populated city in the whole country; Nepal. The population density in the place is 734.33/sq. Km i.e. 1901.9/sq. mi.

The majority of people living in Dharan are from Limbu, Yakkha, Sunuwar, Rai, Brahmin and Chhetri, Newar ethnic groups. Similarly, Magar, Gurung, Tamang, Dalits, Madheshi are minority groups there.

Dharan Sub- Metropolitan City

Dharan is one of two sub-metropolitan cities in province No. 1 along with Janakpur. There are 20 wards in Dharan sub-metropolitan city. Mayor is the head of the sub-metropolitan city but because of the demise of Mr. Tara Subba after suffering from Pneumonia, the post is vacant for now. So, the vice mayor Mrs. Manju Bhandari (Subedi) is leading the city at present.

Weather of Dharan

Dharan has a mild; most of the times warm and temperate climate. As with most of the places in Nepal, Dharan has much less (almost negligible) rainfall during the winters as compared to that of summer.

The average temperature in Dharan is 23.3 degree Celsius. Similarly, the average precipitation here is 1799 mm. The lowest rainfall occurred during the month of December, which averages 4 mm. And the highest rainfall occurs during monsoon time i.e. in the month of July, which averages 476 mm. The difference between the driest and wettest months in terms of rainfall is 472 mm.

June remains the hottest/warmest month of the year in Dharan and the average temperature is 27.7 degree Celsius. Likewise, January remains, as the coldest month of the year and the average temperature during that time is 15.6 Degree Celsius. The average temperature varies by 12.1 degree Celsius all year around.

ERC Campus Dharan/Purwanchal Campus-IOE/Dharan Engineering College

Purwanchal Campus was formerly known as Eastern Region (ERC) Campus. Purwanchal Campus was established in 1976 with the loan agreement from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Similarly, another agreement was conducted with the government of the United Kingdom for the technical assistance. This campus is also commonly called Dharan Engineering College. Delhi public school Dharan (DPS)

Sainik Awasiya Mahavidyalaya Dharan

Among many branches of Sainik Awasiya Mahavidyalaya in various parts of the country, there’s one in Dharan as well. The school is situated in Phurse, Dharan, Sunsari. The school is affiliated to National Examination Board following the government curriculum in which the students are supposed to take SEE (Secondary Education Examination) at the end of grade 10. The students then can choose to pursue higher secondary education under HSEB (Higher Secondary Education Board) examination in three streams; science, management or humanities. Mahendra Multiple Campus

Mahendra Multiple Campus; one of the pioneer colleges in the Eastern part of Nepal was established in 2012 BS and is commonly known as MMC in short form. The campus is a constituent campus of Tribhuvan University. Mahendra Multiple Campus offers education under Humanities, Management, Law and Education streams.

Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Bussiness Administration (BBA), Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS), Bachelor of Law (LLB) are the courses offered in Mahendra Multiple Campus in undergraduate level. Dharan Clock Tower

Dharan Clock Tower, which is also commonly called Ghantaghar, is situated in Bhanu Chowk, Dharan-6. The clock tower is 76.5 ft high and at a certain height somewhere above 50 ft is a designated platform, which can withstand around 50 people at once in order to observe the beautiful city of Dharan. To the north of the clock tower is a park constructed in the memory of people who lost their lives during the earthquake in 1988. Dharan Clock Tower was constructed in the year 1991.


Biratnagar to Dharan

Biratnagar is the nearby city to Dharan in the Eastern direction and it is just 40 KM away. From Dharan, it takes around an hour to reach Biratnagar.

Bhedetar to Dharan

Bhedetar is another city near to Dharan and it is towards the northern side of Dharan. The distance between Bhedetar to Dharan is about 23 KM. It takes less than an hour while driving to Bhedetar from Dharan city.
